This person creates and curates text, video and audio stories that are published and shared across CNN en Español mobile and desktop sites, apps, social accounts and other platforms. This is not just an ‘article writer’. We are looking for a good storyteller.
This is someone who knows how to write briefly and breezily when needed, but who can handle high-concept stories, as well as experiment, ideate, develop, and produce content in audio or video formats. S/he knows how to live blog, how to write in formats that go beyond the newspaper-style article including lists, bullet points, stories with embedded video and social as well as basic charts and graphics templates. Writer/producers will often help shape story ideas and angles around complex topics. They will pitch/execute stories on their own. When a big story breaks, writer/producers will take the lead in updating the main story for all mobile and desktop platforms, making sure the latest developments are accurately and swiftly published. S/he follows best practices for SEO and tagging. In any given day, a writer/producer may be asked to work with correspondents in the field, to do writes off, videos or audios of TV including CNN air or press conferences/speeches, to write newsletters or alerts. Writer/producers must also be skilled at finding distinctive stories or finding ways to tell the news of the day in distinctive ways. All writer/producers must be their own copy editors — this isn’t to say that they won’t have a second set of eyes because all copy does — but that CNN’s news writer/producers are skillful and swift. They turn in clean, crisp and conversational copy on the first draft. All writer/producers need to have a competitive and creative drive. They are also voracious readers and viewers of CNN’s content and far beyond and they are encouraged — no, expected — to share ideas about the many ways to write and produce stories on different platforms as this continue to proliferate. If you want to write only pyramid stories or produce plain audio or video in a distant and disengaged voice, this is not the job for you. The ideal candidate must have a strong command of news programming and be a voracious consumer of news and video content in its many forms. Experience in digital and/or television news production is required. This position will be also be responsible for the creation of video and audio content and bringing our live and tape concepts to life. The role requires someone who is detail-oriented, wildly creative, with strong editorial judgment and skills. The ideal candidate is driven by their inherent curiosity and strong inclination for news, trending stories, and current events. The applicant must be comfortable handling multiple projects and working in a fast-paced, 24/7 deadline-driven environment. An understanding of audience feedback and behavior, and the ability to create and develop content accordingly required. The Daily • Creates, develops and edits content for multiple platforms with a cohesive narrative under deadline. • Takes assignments for daily news and some longer-term stories and projects. • Pitches compelling, informative, community-building, creative content. • that support key stories/themes/initiatives or that otherwise dazzle. • Contributes to special features and stories as assigned. • Collaborates tightly with the CNN en Español news gathering teams, social teams, video teams and Digital programming teams. • Curates content within stories –linking to key video, galleries, existing work inside CNN or referenced external work that should be attributed, ranging from affiliates to competitor sites. • Cares deeply about accuracy and integrity and in maintaining and growing the trust CNN has with audiences worldwide. • As a writer/producer will be responsible for collaborating with the editorial team to develop and create video concepts and programs. • Identifying and booking guests and experts. • Shooting and editing video stories. • Meet aggressive deadlines while completing high quality and on-budget work. • Partner closely with internal stakeholders across the across organization The Essentials • Ability to write clear, accurate news stories. • Experience writing breaking news in real time as a story unfolds. • Ability to frame stories for a global panregional digital audience. • A track record of pitching and executing story ideas. • College degree or equivalent experience. • 5+ years editorial and digital storytelling and news environment experience. • Proven ability to develop and produce video over mobile and/or television platforms. • Passion for topical news and key issues of the moment. • Superior editorial judgment, writing, producing, and editing skills. • Understanding of diverse video formats, from live programming to storytelling. • Quick thinker who thrives under pressure • Creative and unafraid to share new ideas and initiatives. • Strong communication skills, excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills. • Ability to collaborate, with an aptitude for thriving under pressure with diverse staff, talent and other on-air personalities. • Must be agile and adaptable in a rapidly changing environment. • Must be able to work an extended schedule as the news cycle and deadlines require.
