Main purpose of job:

The Communications Officer will support the British Embassy in Buenos Aires to promote UK values, policies and reputation in Argentina through effective communications delivery. The role will contribute to digital content, strategic campaigns, presswork and public diplomacy activity, helping ensure that Embassy communications are clear, accurate, timely and aligned with UK Government priorities.
Working as part of the Embassy communications team, the jobholder will help deliver proactive and reactive media engagement, create and adapt content for social media and other channels, support the planning and delivery of communications campaigns, and assist with the communications aspects of Embassy events and visits. The role will involve close collaboration with colleagues across the Embassy, regional communications colleagues and external stakeholders, including media contacts and delivery partners.
The role supports the Embassy’s wider public diplomacy objectives by helping to communicate the UK’s work in Argentina to priority audiences in a professional, inclusive and culturally sensitive way.

Roles and responsibilities:

  1. Digital communications, channels and campaigns (30%): Lead day-to-day management of the Embassy’s digital communications channels, including the website and social media platforms, ensuring content is accurate, engaging, timely and aligned with UK Government priorities and branding. Plan, create, commission and schedule digital content and campaigns for priority audiences in Argentina, using audience insight, digital trends and performance data to improve reach and engagement. Support the Head of Mission’s digital strategy and publications when required. Identify and engage relevant digital stakeholders in the Argentine context, and provide regular and on-demand evaluation of digital activity.
  2. Content creation (20%): Draft, edit and adapt clear, audience-focused communications materials for Embassy channels and activities, including social media copy, flyers, website articles and other written or graphic content. Produce audiovisual materials for Embassy social media channels and public events, either directly or by coordinating with external suppliers, ensuring outputs are accurate, engaging, accessible and consistent with UK Government priorities and branding.
  3. Events, visits and public diplomacy communications (20%): Support the communications planning and delivery of Embassy events, visits and public diplomacy activity, including social media coverage, photography, video, media handling and post-event communications. Work with the Head of Communications and Embassy teams to support public relations campaigns that promote the UK in Argentina, including through relevant GREAT campaign activity where appropriate.
  4. Branding, evaluation and administrative delivery (10%): Ensure communications materials produced by or for the Embassy follow relevant branding guidelines and are accessible, inclusive and professionally presented. Develop or refresh communications materials as required. Support effective team administration, including maintaining planning tools, organising files and assets, contributing to reporting, and managing the Communications Office budget in line with internal processes.
  5. Team support, line management and cover (20%): Line manage the Communications Intern, supporting tasking, prioritisation, development and delivery. Work collaboratively with the Head of Communications, the wider Embassy, regional communications colleagues and external partners. Provide cover for the Head of Communications when required, helping maintain continuity of communications advice, coordination and delivery during periods of absence.

Resources managed

The incumbent manages one intern and the Communications Office budget.

Learning and development opportunities:

Access to various communications trainings and workshops offered by  the Global Network Capability Team, the Regional Comms Hub, the International Academy, the Americas L&D network and other available resources. It is expected that the incumbent will complete a gov.uk publishing training and several FCDO mandatory trainings. They will also be able to participate in any training delivered in-house, e-learning or external training they find relevant to their position. The role also offers opportunities to contribute to the Embassy’s corporate life by participating in, and potentially leading, internal committees that help shape how the Embassy operates as a workplace community.

Language requirements: Proficient in English and SpanishEssential qualifications, skills and experience  

Essential on arrival:

  1. University degree, or a non-university tertiary qualification from a programme lasting at least three years, preferably in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing or a related field.
  2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish, with the ability to draft clear, accurate and audience-focused content in both languages.
  3. At least two years’ professional experience in communications, digital communications, public relations, press, marketing or event communications.
  4. Experience managing social media accounts and producing content for digital channels, including Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube and/or websites.
  5. Basic graphic design, photography and video editing skills, with the ability to produce simple, engaging visual and audiovisual content.
  6. Strong research skills, including the ability to assess information from different sources, monitor current affairs and identify relevant communications opportunities and risks.
  7. Basic understanding of current affairs, the Argentine political and media environment, and/or foreign policy issues relevant to the role.
  8. Proactive, flexible and collaborative team player with strong attention to detail, sound judgement and the ability to build effective working relationships.
  9. Adaptability and creativity, with the ability to evolve in response to changes in the digital communications ecosystem, identify emerging trends and apply them imaginatively to produce relevant, engaging and audience-focused content.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience  

Desirable:

  1. Basic working knowledge of AI tools and their appropriate use in communications planning, drafting, content production or evaluation.
  2. Experience supporting or delivering communications campaigns, including planning, implementation and evaluation.
  3. Experience managing budgets, suppliers or external providers for communications, events or creative projects.
  4. Knowledge of digital advertising tools and analytics platforms, for example Google Ads, Meta Ads or equivalent tools.
  5. An existing network of contacts across the PR, media, digital or creative sectors in Argentina.
